Your first bridge deal: the basic map

Four seats, two partnerships and a sequence worth understanding.

Setup and sequence

Bridge uses a standard fifty-two-card pack without jokers. Four players receive thirteen cards each, with partners opposite. The auction precedes play, and the final contract sets the objective.

Read in stages

Locate the seats, identify the auction, then follow the play before considering the final score. A short reference note with these stage names can help a beginner find the relevant part of a longer lesson.

Use a complete lesson

ACBL’s learning page links beginner explanations and learning tools. Our orientation is not a substitute for a partnership agreement or tournament procedure. Ask your teacher which format and system you are learning.

A first practice task

In an open demonstration, have each person name the current stage before discussing a choice. Record an unresolved question rather than borrowing an answer from a different card game.
